　　罗定肉桂种植历史悠久，肉桂本是山中野生植物，秦汉时期，当地农民已自发种植，加以利用，其后不断发展。据康熙二十六年（1687年）编纂的《罗定州志》记载，当时罗定山区种植肉桂已有相当数量。明清时期，罗定州城和泗纶、榃滨等集镇已开设有一批肉桂产品购销商铺，部份产品已销往国外。晚清年间，罗定肉桂已饮誉海内外。民国时期，罗定肉桂继续发展，“罗定桂、广宁竹、怀集木”已成为当时广东有名的三大山林特产，誉满南粤。罗定境内种植桂树历史悠久，尤其注重以传统方法栽培，所产的桂皮、桂油，以其品质纯、产量大而扬名海外，产品远销欧洲、美洲、南洋群岛一带及港澳地区。
